Introducing the HP 3D Multi Jet Fusion 4210 Printing Solution

February 12, 2018 By Mary Baumgarten

In November 2017, HP expanded its 3D printing portfolio with the addition of the HP Jet Fusion 3D 4210 Printing Solution. Designed for industrial-scale 3D manufacturing, the upgrade incorporates a MultiJet Fusion printer and processing station that can be used on an existing 3D 4200.

HP Multi Jet Fusion 4210

The hardware and firmware upgrades improve overall system efficiency and enable continuous operation and the new processing station is capable of handling significantly higher materials volumes.

“HP’s Jet Fusion 3D systems have now reached a technological and economic inflection point that combines the speed, quality, and scalability needed to accelerate manufacturing’s digital industrial revolution.” – Ramon Pastor, General Manager of Multi Jet Fusion for HP’s 3D printing business.

By focusing on end-user needs HP has been able to make vast improvements to their Multi Jet Fusion technology and address the pain points of industrial manufacturers.

The MJF 4210 Represents An Economic Inflection Point for Industrial-Scale 3D Manufacturing

One of the drawbacks of legacy 3D printing is the high materials cost, due to significant material waste and the limited availability of large quantities, and HP’s new Jet Fusion 4210 3D Printing Solution solves this problem.

HP’s PA 11, PA 12 Glass Beads, and Polypropylene (PP) materials boast industry-leading reusability, and customers who purchase the HP Jet Fusion 3D 4210 benefit from shared service contracts. These contracts significantly lower pricing on the engineering-grade 3D printing materials and agents by making the materials rapidly available in large quantities.

Coupled with breakthrough productivity, these material upgrades represent a shift in 3D Printing technology. The Jet Fusion 4210 increases production volume capabilities and significantly decreases operating costs, priming the solution for industrial-scale 3D manufacturing,

“The new 3D 4210 Printing Solution enables our customers to mass-produce parts using HP’s Multi Jet Fusion technology for 65% less than other processes, and fully benefit from the economies of scale,” – Ramon Pastor

Based on internal testing and cost analysis, the advancement raises the “break-even point” for large-scale 3D manufacturing to up to 110,000 parts and enables the industry’s lowest cost-per-part (CPP), proving the solution’s value as a viable industrial-manufacturing solution.

Impact and Implications of the Jet Fusion 4210 Solution

Superior voxel-level control and breakthrough productivity are attractive characteristics to modern manufacturers. Now that HP’s Multi Jet Fusion technology is capable of delivering favorable economics, it’s no surprise that the HP MJF 4210 is being rapidly adopted across various industries.

Many North American companies are purchasing the solution for in-house use and others are using the solution to sell printed parts. HP also recently entered the $6 trillion Asia-Pacific and Japan manufacturing segment when it launched the product in India in December 2017.

HP has already forged partnerships with some of the world’s leading manufacturers and materials producers, allowing the company to set up a feedback system to continuously refine their technology and Open Materials Platform, and improve their ability to accommodate end-user needs.

As global adoption continues to drive innovation the MJF family of solutions will only continue to improve. In just one year, HP has added over five new solutions and five new materials that redefined the boundaries of 3D printing, including engineering-grade colored parts.

Introducing the HP 3D Jet Fusion 300/500 Series

February 12, 2018 By Mary Baumgarten

Until recently, 3D printing required certain production volumes in order to be economically worthwhile, and the material options were limited. However, many major players have been working together to improve additive manufacturing economics, accelerate materials innovation, and increase adoption across industries.

HP made a big announcement on Feb. 5 as it continued its democratization of 3D design and manufacturing with the introduction of the HP 3D 300/500 series. The four new 3D printers are the industry’s first solution that enables manufacturers to produce engineering-grade, functional parts in full color, black or white – with voxel control – in a fraction of the time of other solutions.

The expanded portfolio not only addresses the need for color printing; it also offers a viable solution for companies running smalling production volumes.

“Many small OEMs print less than 130 parts per week and these new products are targeted at them,” – Ramon Pastor, general manager, Multi Jet Fusion 3D Printing Business of HP.

With a favorable cost per part and starting cost of $50,000, the solution opens up innovation for small-to-medium-sized product development teams, design businesses, entrepreneurs, and universities, research institutions – not just industrial manufacturers.

HP Jet Fusion 340, 380, 540, and 580 Specifications

The new Jet Fusion 300/500 series runs on the same Multi Jet Fusion platform as its industrial HP Jet Fusion 3200/4200/4210 products, giving designers voxel-level control and the ability to create prototypes that are near identical to the end-stage item.

The new Jet Fusion 300 / 500 series of 3D printers features a compact design (61.6 x 37.6 x 59.3 in) and enhanced workflow, including an automated materials delivery system. All-in-all, the solution greatly improves user experience (and unattended operation) while simultaneously increasing production efficiency and output.

The expanded product portfolio launched with a new material called HP PA Color Boost (CB) 12, and supports three color file formats (OBJ, VRML, and 3MF). The new material is similar to the one used in HP’s industrial products and helps to keep running costs down while offering a fraction of the printing time of comparable solutions.

The solution comes with a choice of two print bed sizes to accommodate both smaller and large print sizes (7.5 x 10 x 9.8 in and 7.5 x 13.1 x 9.8).

  • The Jet Fusion 340 (black or white)/380 (color) is designed for customers who print fewer parts per build.
  • Jet Fusion 540 (black or white)/580 (color) is for larger parts and heavier production.

A breakthrough solution in an accessible price range, the HP 3D 300/500 series broadens the scope for MJF technology and should prove to greatly accelerate adoption.

Distribution, Availability, and Impact of the 300/500 Series

The Jet Fusion 300/500 series of 3D printers is available for pre-order now and will beging shipping in the second half of the 2018 calendar year. Based on previous rollouts, adoption should only prove to refine HP’s Open Platform approach and contribute to the development of new materials and use cases.

“No matter your industry, no matter your design complexity, no matter what colors fit your business needs – black, white, or the full-color spectrum – the new HP Jet Fusion 300 / 500 series gives you the freedom to create brilliant new parts liberated from the constraints of traditional production methods.” – Stephen Nigro

By making the technology available to smaller firms and research institutions and building on its existing partnerships, HP is opening up the technology’s application beyond industrial manufacturing and increasing its potential for innovation.

In the same press release, HP formally announced its collaboration with Dassault Systemes in an effort to optimize Dassault’s Solidworks 3D design software and engineering applications for HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing lineup. In empowering entrepreneurs, makers, students, and businesses, the companies hope to increase product design innovation.

The HP 3D 300/500 Series enables customers to go from prototyping to full production on the same Multi Jet Fusion technology platform and also evolves the partner program to deliver broader capabilities and target new resellers. By democratizing the use of their technology, HP is opening up 3D printing to the masses which will further accelerate adoption and innovation.

HP’s Open Platform Approach Accelerates 3D Printing

December 10, 2017 By Mary Baumgarten

When HP announced their revolutionary end-to-end 3D printing solution in 2016 there were high hopes and equal amounts of skepticism. After all, HP’s dream is to completely reinvent the way we design and print functional parts, and establishing its place in modern manufacturing requires serious disruption.

Historically, 3D printing hasn’t offered the application or economics (profitability) to be a sustainable manufacturing solution. But through its Open Platform Approach, HP has been able to successfully collaborate with various partners to lay a foundation for additive manufacturing’s next industrial revolution.

HPs Open Platform Approach

The HP Open Platform certifies partners for collaboration on materials innovation and new applications for its 3D printing technology. By working together to reduce costs, facilitate adoption, and create an open-source platform for certified 3D materials, the company has fostered the right environment to spur innovation.

In opening its platform to their growing partner ecosystem, HP has accelerated its ability as a solutions provider to offer new materials, software, and services and it does not plan on losing momentum.

HP Has Been Working Extensive With Materials Producers

In manufacturing, parts and end products require specific material properties: color, texture, strength, durability, etc.. While MJF technology allows for voxel level control (and with it, the ability to control material properties), improving material availability is a key factor in broadening the solution’s usage.

To empower their partners, HP invested in a 3D Open Materials and Applications Lab – a 3,500 square-foot space accessible to materials partners – for product development, testing new materials and collaborating in real-time. This also includes a suite of research tools to develop materials under the HP brand that go beyond the range of currently available materials.

These currently available materials already boast the industry’s leading reusability and HP already announced its next material suite: HP 3D High Reusability PA 11, PA 12 (glass beads), and HP 3D High Reusability Polypropylene.

Material innovation should only pick up as HP has already secured partnerships with some of the world’s leading materials companies who are helping to co-develop new materials and refine the certification for future partners who join the program.

HP already announced their plan launch color parts followed by an effort for metal in 2018.

Establishing Multi Jet Fusion Printing as a Business Solution

While HP’s traditional printers have a solid footprint in modern businesses, helping industrial clients improve their ability to manufacture products is uncharted territory.

To ensure their end-to-end solution meets the needs of industrial manufacturers, the company teamed up with Deloitte who has deep experience in the space.

“We are making big investments in terms of capabilities, in terms of personnel, that will be focused on going to market with HP and the ability to deliver.“ – Deloitte CEO Punit Renjen.

The technology already produces superior quality parts at impressive speeds and costs and by partnering with Deloitte, HP can more effectively penetrate the industrial ecosystem.

Facilitating Large-Scale Adoption of Multi Jet Fusion 3D Printing Technology

To facilitate adoption HP 3D is working with select distribution partners to make the technology more accessible in specific markets and industry sectors.

The company has established several HP 3D Printing Reference and Experience Centers where guests can engage with the product firsthand. By making sample parts available on-demand and creating an immersive environment, end-users can understand how the disruptive technology can improve workflows and fit into their business model.

Many companies are already selling printed parts in large quantities and the introduction of new materials will prove to increase usage. The latest upgrade presented an inflection point in cost modeling and as the surrounding ecosystem continues to progress, the product and economics will improve further.

Through it’s Open Platform Approach, HP has successfully fostered an ecosystem to advance the solution and its adoption. First-year progress has been promising and future innovation and partnerships will continue to increase the speed of adoption.

NovaStar’s LISN Calibration Capability

August 3, 2016 By Mary Baumgarten

What is an LISN?

LISN stands for Line Impedance Stabilization Network. Basically, it’s an instrument used to measure the base radio frequencies of other devices by isolating the radio frequency of the power input. By providing a precise impedance to the power input of the EUT (equipment under test), the LISN gets repeatable measurements of the noise present at the LISN measurement port for the EUT. On top of isolating the unwanted RF (radio frequency) signals from the power source, LISN’s can be used to forecast conducted emission for diagnostic and pre-compliance testing.

Functions of a Line Impedence Stabilization Network

The LISN serves three main purposes:

  • Stable Line Impedance
  • Isolation of Power Source Noise
  • Safe Connection of the Measuring Equipment
  •

    LISN Calibration at Novastar

Because they are used for different tests and frequency ranges at different operating voltage levels, there are various types of LISN’s. In general, the anticipated inductance of the power line for the intended installation of the EUT plays a role in identifying the correct type of LISN needed for testing. When testing, it’s important to account for the operating environment for the types of equipment covered by each standard.

Because LISN testing is so complex and precise, it’s important that devices are correctly calibrated. NovaStar’s Calibration laboratory can now test and calibrate various LISN technology with the addition of an LISN Test Chamber, also known as a Faraday cage (named after the English scientist who invented them in 1836). Our technicians run tests in an electronically isolated environment inside an 8’ x 8’ room within the chamber to provide transmission, reflectance and impedance data for LISN’s from 5Hz to 3GHz.

The results of the calibrations are in accordance with CISPR25:2008 specifications and performed using ANSI C63.4-2014 methods.

So if your lab requires calibration of your LISN’s, NovaStar Calibration now provides this service.  Instruments can be shipped to NovaStar or picked-up and delivered for free in southern Michigan and northern Ohio.   NovaStar provides a one week turn around to assure your LISN works accurately and is back in service quickly.
